January 31 - Day 4 - Heading home

departure
Preparing to depart Wilkins Lake

Mike got us up early, it was 'out' day and Mike had the long drive back to Windsor. By 9:15 am we were all loaded up, and we even left behind a nice stack of firewood. Someone walking through the forest one summer might come upon it, and wonder what on earth a nice pile of firewood was doing in the middle of nowhere? Winter camping, that's what!

The trek back was much easier of course, with us now going downhill through the ravine on the portage and following our already cleared old trail. There was a few spots where I ran into trouble as I kept falling into Jeffrey's tracks as his snowshoes had chewed up the snow in his quest to find his backpack. It was like walking into potholes, and soon my ankles were screaming at me. We shaved off nearly an hour and a half on our travel back out to the vehicle, quite a difference when one isn't breaking trail. Near the end though, the hills that we originally trekked down, were now uphill monsters. Mike lead the way, pulling far ahead of both myself and Jeffrey, it was tiring work. Just after 12 noon we were loaded up in Mike's van and we were on our way, the trip was over. We all had a great time, and already have talked excitedly about next year's trek.

Winter tripping is a lot of work, but it is a lot of fun too and the more people you have the better it is, sharing the the tasks helps everyone get things done quicker. I look forward another trip next winter. Thank you for the great adventure Mike & Jeffrey!
