Back from 10 days thru Magnetawan Access#3
Filed Under Mini-log
Yesterday, we returned from a 10 day trip thru Algonquin Park’s west side. This had to be one of the most solitude filled trips we have had into Algonquin Park’s interior in the last few years. To top off the solitude factor, the weather and wildlife factors made our trip a very enjoyable one. For me the highlight of our trip was something that was heard but not seen..moose. Every night of our trip with the exception of the very last night, we heard moose calling as it is the time of the ‘rut’ when moose mate.
The photographer in me was itching to jump into my canoe one evening, for while on Burntroot Lake we heard a full blown Bull fight. Several calls could be heard, then the stomping of hooves, and splashing thru water. The climax came when I heard one of the moose roar, which was followed by the sudden charge of a moose thru what sounded like the shallows along a shoreline, then the locking of antlers! What a sight it would’ve been to see the raw power of two moose engaged in battle for the promise of a female. I have read that such displays are brief and usually a mock display of power; rarely engaging in deadly physical contact, but not entirely un-heard of.
As our trip progressed so did the autumn colours, the weather and winds were both fair, with the lowest temperature recorded being 1.6°C, the highest 28.9°C. Only one day of rain held us up, opting for a layover day instead of moving, we enjoyed the day drying out around our fire-pit, with hot chocolate and the last of our smoked sausage & cheeses.
This trip for both of us featured the most beavers, otters and Great Blue Herons either of us had seen in any one trip. Indeed, the fall is a great time to see many of Algonquin Park’s wildlife out and on the move, preparing for the coming winter. We called for and heard wolves on White Trout Lake, a large pack it was, with at least 4 wolves answering and several ‘yipps’. I surmise that the wolves that ‘yip’ are youngsters? I’m not sure but am hooping somone can answer that assumption for me. As I’ve heard them before and wonder if that is the case.
More will be available for reading online in a posted trip-log sometime early in the new year. Photos can be best viewed in the ’slideshow’ section of this blog site.
