Recently, I purchased another copy of Jeffrey McMurtrie’s Algonquin Park canoeing Map Book. The actual title is alot more detailed but for reading purposes, I have shortened it here. This second revision of the map book has some nice additions to it, all of them I am happy to relate improve the book’s usefulness.
The size of the book has increased slightly from 8×10 inches to 8.5×11 inches. The maps contained within have also been enlarged, on the order of roughly a 10% increase. The bigger the map the better I always say! Additionally, the legend has been enlarged which makes it much easier to consult when needed. As well the overview map has been enlarged and cleaned-up; it is now less cluttered with detail, only showing page locations of specific areas of the map, a nice touch.
One of the two major improvements that I find the most appealing is the new book format. The book is now spiral bound, forgoing the regular glue bound book style. The spiral bound makes it much easier to read a map in your lap or in a canoe or just about anywhere you are, when you want to have a map ’spread-out’ for detailed study.

The other major improvement has been the inclusion of corresponding map markers. Ever been stuck flipping through a map book, trying to find the next page that contained an area of the map that ran off the previous page? Jeffrey has solved this problem with the inclusion of page makers on the outer edge of each map page. This feature combined with the spiral binding, makes flipping through the map book a breeze.
Picture (below) of the spiral bound map book, a very handy format to have for such a detailed and useful map book. The map book still uses the laser printer based paper, which will not run when dampened by moisture, be it snow, rain or beer! If you have held off picking up a copy of the map book, now might be the time, Jeffrey once again has improved upon his design, both on his own and through the suggestions of his readers. I highly recommend this book. For more information on Jeffrey McMurtrie’s free Algonquin Map and the newly revised map book(for purchase), head on over to www.algonquinmap.com

Thanks Mark! If anyone has any further suggestions, let me know
You’re most welcome Jeffrey. I should be Thanking you! I really like this new book. The spiral binding really makes a difference. I’m off later this week for 10 days, and know that the new book will come in real handy. Thanks Again
Hey Mark…
Great book.. I have the 1st edition, now I need a second..hahaha
Just one suggestion….
If the book was either in a three ring or 8 ring binder, a page could be updated instead of reprinting the entire book….
They use this method for the Ontario Building Code and the Ontario Fire Code and seems to work well for updates and changes…
Thanks again and a great book
Glenn
Hey Glenn,
There’s just layout changes in the second - no data changes.
Interesting idea… a few thoughts:
-3 ring might not be good enough to hold the pages (ie it’s a lot easier for them to tear out than w. spiral binding)
-8 ring.. hmm I wonder how thin you can get them??
-To date when I’ve made changes they’ve been significant and for everywhere on the map (Maybe that’ll change in the future after the next version which is a complete redo)
But yea, certainly something to think about. At the very least spiral binding allows me to replace pages with mistakes on my end before they ship (ie if I have a stockpile of them), but your idea is a good one. Something to think about,..
